Immersive Pedagogy in the Metaverse:

A Framework for VR Cinematography Education and Creative Training

This presentation explores the evolving pedagogical approaches required for Cinematic Virtual Reality (CVR) education, moving beyond traditional 2D screen-based film studies. As immersive storytelling matures, there is a critical need for structured educational frameworks that address the unique spatial and technical demands of the VR medium. This research proposes an "immersive pedagogy" framework that utilizes virtual, metaverse-based environments to facilitate the embodied learning of VR cinematography and spatial narrative techniques.

To illustrate the limitations of physical classrooms in teaching CVR, this study will examine the distinct cinematographic challenges presented by recent high-fidelity productions, drawing upon The Soloist VR (2022) as a primary reference point. Such productions highlight the complexities of 360-degree orientation, spatial intimacy, and non-directional audience attention—concepts that are inherently difficult to grasp through traditional lectures or flat-screen viewing.

By leveraging virtual collaborative spaces, students can computationally reconstruct and visually "step into" the spatial logic of complex CVR scenes. The proposed framework investigates how the interactive deconstruction of camera placement, lighting, and blocking within a virtual environment enhances the acquisition of spatial storytelling skills. Ultimately, this paper aims to provide a flexible, scalable model for using metaverse platforms as high-fidelity laboratories for artistic pedagogy, preparing the next generation of creators for the distinct language of CVR.
